Tips for Moving

When trying to find a company to move you into your new home, be sure to ask the company for a written estimate. This way you will be able to see what exactly you are being charged for during the move.

In order to take advantage of a quick sale on your home it works to put you stuff into storage for a couple of month when you find a new home go can move the items out of storage and into your new place. Most storage facilities offer short term leases that will allow you to do this. It is the cheapest way to move when your new home is not ready yet.

If you are having the moving company do your packing, it may be a good idea to pack your breakables by yourself. This way you will know that they have plenty of cushioning around them, and will not break during transit. Also, be sure to properly mark these boxes, so the movers know that those boxes are fragile and should be handled accordingly. It sounds simple, but these are the little things that people forget to do during the hectic time of moving.

Always check the contract you sign to see how liable the moving company is for damaged items. It is almost inevitable that something will break or get damaged by the movers. You want to be sure they will pay to fix or replace your property.

Investigate your moving company before using them. If it is not a well known or national moving company do some investigating. There have been several scams in the past involving moving companies. Ask for recent references, check with local agencies, the Better Business Bureau, Consumer Reports, etc. It may be worth it to look into getting some additional insurance for the move as well.

Remember when moving to plan accordingly. Look your purchase agreement over carefully before signing it to make sure you see when it states you will receive your keys to your new home. Sometimes the seller may have 1, 2, 3, or even more days after closing to hand the keys over to you. If your loan does not close until sometime in the evening, you may not receive your keys until the next day after the mortgage records with the county. You don't want to be stuck with people moving into your old house when you are still waiting to move into your new house. Timing is of the essence. When in doubt ask your mortgage professional or your realtor specifics about when you should expect to receive the keys to your new home.

It is also important to let friends and family know you have moved and where. It just takes a few minutes to make out a postcard with your new information on it and mail it to everyone in your address book. Also make sure that you notify all of your credit cards and other accounts as well.

Remember to forward your mail to your new residence. Post offices can take up to 2 weeks to start forwarding mails after receiving the request for change of address. To avoid delays in getting mails, complete the change of address request with the U S Postal Service a week before the scheduled move.

When moving make sure you pack a box or suitcase of anything of importance, such as toilet paper, deodorant, toothbrush, soap & shampoo, towel(s) medicines you might currently be taking, contact solutions, important documents (such as income documents and tax returns), a clothing outfit or two, light bulbs, etc... A survival box is necessary in case the moving truck gets delayed, boxes or items get misplaced, or just to simply have immediate access to everything that is immediately necessary.

If your move is job related, make sure you check with your human resources(HR) department. Many companies HR departments have some extremely attractive moving packages, as well as many great contacts in and around areas where the company conducts business.
