Premium

An amount paid on a regular schedule by a policyholder that maintains insurance coverage.

Another example of a premium is a mortgage insurance premium (MIP). Mortgage insurance should not be confused with homeowners insurance. Mortgage insurance protects the lender from the additional risk they assume by lending more than 80% of the value of your home. Most people avoid paying mortgage insurance by splitting their mortgage into two loans, such as 80% on the first, and 20% on the second.

Shop around for the best premium, as insurance companies are very competitive and you can save a good amount if you shop around enough.

For instance on a mortgage loan the homeowners insurance premium can be paid directly by borrowers in a yearly lump sum installment, quarterly installments or monthly installment. The amount for the insurance premium can also be collected monthly into the escrow account by the mortgage servicer and paid by them once a year when the premium becomes due.

Making sure that your credit score is as good as it can be is an important part of being financially sound. Often times premiums are credit score based just a mortgage home loan rate would be.
